Art on the Lake 2010

19 08 2010

Art on the Lake.1
August 20-22, 2010

The Eleventh annual Art on the Lake Fine Art Show at the Marina Resort, Big Bear Lake, CA.

Over fifty artists from throughout Southern California will exhibit their work at this annual festival and artists will be inside the “big white tent,” as well as on the beautiful grounds of the Marina Resort.  Artwork will include a variety of mediums, including paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor, sculptures, jewelry, and photography.

In celebration of our tenth anniversary, painter, sculptor and photographer, John Holland was asked to be the featured artist.  His painting, “Musical Chairs” was featured on the cover of the program for the first Art on the Lake event in 2000 and is again showcased on the cover of this year’s program.  John has exhibited at each of the ten Art on the Lake Festivals.

John has a BA degree in Biology from UC Riverside, spent three and a half years as an Officer in the US Navy and then enrolled in the Masters program in architecture at UC Berkeley. Over two years spent at the College of Environmental Design, his interests changed to graphic design and art. His painting, “Nova Scotia Dorys” was selected for the National Watercolor Show. During this period he also became interested in sculpture and studied with Betty Davenport Ford in Claremont, California.

Hours for the show are 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday. Open to the pubic, no admission fee. Artists Reception is Friday  evening Aug. 20, 2010.

Boulder Bay Park-Lakeside park reopens in Big Bear Lake, boasts lots of amenities

10 08 2010

New Boulder Bay Park Hours Just over ten years it took from conception and a generous donation of land and money, to complete Boulder Bay Park in the City of Big Bear Lake, CA.

By complete we mean a total makeover of what has been pretty much an eyesore between the highway and the lake for a decade. The recently opened public park boasts a limited amount of free parking, restrooms, a covered pavilion, seating and picnic benches, landscaping, fencing and a fishing dock.

Early plans for a walk in ramp for launching kayaks was abandoned on complaints from local marinas and lake management  that this new permanent launch ramp would somehow pose a quagga mussel threat that doesn’t already exist along the 17 miles of unrestricted shoreline.

Parking is very limited so I am sure abuse will be a problem on traditionally busy summer weekends (like towels on all the chaise lounges at the pool and there’s nobody in sight) once the word gets out to park users and the newly seeded lawns become established.

View from the huge pavilion looking west, Boulder Bay, Big Bear Lake, CA

No doubt the completion of the park is a feather in the cap of all those who supported spending the nearly 1 million dollars it cost to complete the park to date. It is for sure an improvement to the Boulder Bay area and will get plenty of use from visitors and locals alike.

The park is located on the south shore of Big Bear Lake, adjacent to Boulder Bay Market, about 1 mile west of the Village, Big Bear Lake’s destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. Walk from free parking to Boulder Bay Market.

Boulder Bay Park is publicly owned, operated and maintained by the City of Big Bear Lake and welcomes your suggestions and comments on the facilities, use and maintenance of the park.

You can reach the Public Works Department at 909-866-7521 or online at   bblpw@citybigbearlake.com

Canoes, Kayaks and Boat Rentals – Canoeing and Kayaking on Big Bear Lake

28 07 2010

Canoeing and Kayaking on Big Bear Lake

Our Friends Jim and Janet Canoeing on Big Bear Lake

It’s true that ‘tricks are for kids’  and young people really enjoy fast boats, wake boarding , water skiing and tubing but that doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t enjoy getting out in the fresh air and getting some exercise. Tamara and I have really enjoyed our time paddling on the lake for a couple of years now. The cost of getting set up with your own boat may be manageable for some, but we find renting is the best solution for us. When finished with our outing we just walk away with the great memories and leave all the work of boat ownership to our friends at the marina! It makes the decision to get out there and paddle a very simple one and doesn’t involve finding equipment, loading and unloading a boat and then having to reverse the process on the other end.

New lightweight boats and gear are very manageable and easy to use, and we can break away from work for a couple of hours early and get a great workout at any level we choose. You can find Canoe and Kayak Rentals, Boat Tours and General Boating Information at any of these establishments.
